EDITORS COMMENTS
At the Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube, on the 20-21 March 1814, the Allied forces under the command of Prince Schwarzenberg emerged victorious against the French army led by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. This pivotal moment in the Napoleonic Wars marked a significant turning point in the final campaign against the French emperor, who had been in exile on the island of Elba since his abdication in 1814. The Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube took place in the Aube region of northeastern France, and saw the Allied forces, consisting primarily of Austrian, Prussian, and Russian troops, launch a surprise attack on the French army. Despite initial French successes, the Allied forces managed to push back the French lines, inflicting heavy casualties and ultimately securing a decisive victory. Napoleon, who had been caught off guard by the Allied advance, was forced to withdraw his troops and retreat towards Paris. The defeat at Arcis-sur-Aube marked the beginning of the end for the French emperor, who would be defeated once again at the Battle of Waterloo just a few months later. This print, depicting the aftermath of the battle, shows the Allied forces celebrating their victory over the French. The scene is filled with the chaos and excitement of battle, with soldiers raising their flags and firing their muskets in triumph. The defeated French soldiers can be seen in the background, surrendering to their victors. The landscape is dotted with the ruins of destroyed buildings and the smoke from the battle rises in the distance. The Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube was a crucial moment in European history, and this print serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this epic conflict.
