Born in Italy around 250 AD, Denis was a devout Christian who dedicated his life to spreading the faith in Gaul (modern-day France). In 258 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Valerian, Denis was arrested and brought before the Prefect of Paris for his refusal to renounce his beliefs. Despite being offered the chance to recant, Denis remained steadfast in his faith, and was consequently sentenced to death by decapitation. According to legend, after his beheading, Denis picked up his severed head and carried it several miles to the hill now known as Montmartre, where he continued to preach to the people. The site became a place of pilgrimage, and a church was built in Denis' honor. Over the centuries, the shrine grew in importance, and Saint Denis became the patron saint of France.
