EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval photograph captures the radiant beauty and regal elegance of Maria Jose of Belgium, born Princess Maria Annunciata of Austria-Hungary, who became the Wife of Umberto of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont, in 1907. The image, taken in 1906, showcases Maria Jose's striking ginger hair, framed by a cascade of delicate curls, and her piercing, dark eyes that seem to sparkle with an inner light. Her regal bearing is accentuated by her elegant attire, featuring a high-necked, long-sleeved dress adorned with intricate lace detailing, and a pair of elegant earrings that add a touch of glamour to her look. Maria Jose was born on August 4, 1870, in Vienna, Austria, and was the eldest daughter of Archduke Rudolf of Austria and Princess Stephanie of Belgium. She was raised in a privileged environment, surrounded by the opulence and grandeur of the Habsburg court. In 1906, she married Umberto of Savoy, the heir to the throne of Italy, in a grand ceremony held in Brussels. The union between Maria Jose and Umberto was a significant one, as it marked the end of the long-standing enmity between Austria and Italy, and paved the way for a period of relative peace between the two countries. Despite the political significance of her marriage, Maria Jose remained a beloved figure in her own right, known for her grace, intelligence, and compassion. She was an active patron of the arts, and was particularly interested in music and literature. After Umberto's death in 1931, Maria Jose lived in exile in Portugal, where she continued to support various charitable causes and remained a symbol of dignity and resilience in the face of adversity. She passed away on January 27, 2001, at the age of 130, leaving behind a rich legacy as a beloved queen and a symbol of the enduring power of the human spirit.
