Louis I, also known as Louis the Pious, was the King of the Franks from 814 to 840. In 833, at the age of sixty-two, Louis shocked his sons by remarrying for the third time, this time to his cousin Judith. The king's motivation for this marriage was to secure a male heir from this union, as his previous marriages had produced only daughters. However, Louis's sons, who were already dissatisfied with their father's rule and the distribution of the kingdom among them, saw this as an affront to their own inheritance. The eldest sons, Pepin I and Lothair I, were particularly incensed by their father's actions. They saw this new marriage and the potential heir as a threat to their own power and status. In response, they conspired to depose their father and take the throne for themselves. The exact events leading up to this moment are not well documented, but it is known that Louis was arrested and imprisoned by his sons in 833.
