EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis I, also known as Louis the Pious, was the King of the Franks from 814 to 840. In 833, at the age of sixty-two, Louis shocked his sons by remarrying for the third time, this time to his cousin Judith. The king's motivation for this marriage was to secure a male heir from this union, as his previous marriages had produced only daughters. However, Louis's sons, who were already dissatisfied with their father's rule and the distribution of the kingdom among them, saw this as an affront to their own inheritance. The eldest sons, Pepin I and Lothair I, were particularly incensed by their father's actions. They saw this new marriage and the potential heir as a threat to their own power and status. In response, they conspired to depose their father and take the throne for themselves. The exact events leading up to this moment are not well documented, but it is known that Louis was arrested and imprisoned by his sons in 833. This print, titled "Louis I Made Captive," depicts the moment of Louis's arrest. The king is shown seated on his throne, surrounded by his angry sons, who are brandishing weapons and demanding his abdication. The expression on Louis's face conveys a sense of shock and disbelief, as he is unable to comprehend the betrayal of his own children. The consequences of this event were far-reaching, as it marked the beginning of the division of the Carolingian Empire among Louis's sons. The reign of Louis the Pious came to an end, and the kingdom was split into three parts: the western part went to Lothair I, the middle part to Pepin I, and the eastern part to Louis's youngest son, Louis the German. This division set the stage for a long period of conflict and instability in the Frankish kingdom.
