1893 Bureau Claims Created Journalist Julia Mediumship Messages Mocks Punch Receive Stead Borderland Paranormal

EDITORS COMMENTS
Julias Bureau: The Paranormal Phenomenon Sweeping Victorian London, Mocked by Punch (1893) In the late 19th century, the phenomenon of spiritualism and mediumship captivated the public imagination, with many claiming to receive messages from the 'other side.' One such figure was Julias Bureau, a medium created by the renowned investigative journalist W.T. Stead. Stead, known for his sensationalist reporting style, claimed that Julias Bureau was a genuine medium, receiving messages from the 'Borderland' - a term used to describe the realm between the physical and spiritual worlds. The idea of Julias Bureau was first introduced to the public in Stead's article, "Does Mr. Punch Believe in Spiritualism?" published in the Pall Mall Gazette on October 13, 1893. In the article, Stead described a séance at which Julias Bureau received messages from the spirits, which were then accurately identified by the sitters. The article caused a sensation, with many expressing skepticism and others expressing belief. However, not everyone was convinced. Punch, a popular satirical magazine, took aim at Julias Bureau in a cartoon published on November 18, 1893. The cartoon depicts a séance in progress, with Julias Bureau seated at a table surrounded by sitters. A spirit is shown emerging from a trumpet, only to reveal itself as a bottle of ink and a feather quill. The caption reads, "Julias Bureau's New Spiritualistic Apparatus - The Ink-Well and Quill Spirit." Despite the mockery, Julias Bureau continued to attract attention, with Stead publishing a series of articles detailing the medium's communications with the spirits. The controversy surrounding Julias Bureau and spiritualism would continue to rage for years to come, with many debating the authenticity of the messages received and the motives of those involved.
