EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcolored etching by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr., an English gentleman is depicted in the fashion of August 1803. The man wears an elegant green jacket, which is cinched at the waist with a sash, and a pair of Casimir breeches, which are characterized by their high waistline and tight fit. The gentleman completes his outfit with a rabbit-ear cravat, which is secured with a bow at the neck, and a pair of high boots that reach up to his knees. In one hand, the Englishman carries a stylish top hat, while in the other, he holds a cane with an intricately designed handle. The etching, titled "English Costumes during the Revolution and First Empire, 1795-1806," was published by Levy in Paris in 1879. The rabbit-ear cravat was a popular fashion accessory during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and was often worn with a waistcoat and breeches. The green jacket, which was also known as a "coat with skirts," was a versatile garment that could be worn for both formal and informal occasions. The Casimir breeches, which were named after the French king Louis-Philippe I, were a popular alternative to the more traditional knee-length breeches. This etching offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion trends of the time, and provides a window into the elegant and refined world of the English gentleman in the early 19th century. The intricate details of the man's outfit, from the textured fabric of his jacket to the delicate folds of his cravat, are beautifully captured in the handcoloring, making this a truly stunning and collectible piece of historical art.
