EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Rev. Francis Jeune, D.D. (1806-1868) is depicted in the dignified attire of a bishop-designate, reflecting his imminent appointment as the Bishop of Peterborough in 1864. Jeune's serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of deep contemplation and spiritual authority. Born in France in 1806, Jeune immigrated to England as a young man and was educated at Oscott College in Birmingham. He was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1836 and went on to serve as a curate in various parishes in the Midlands. In 1850, he was appointed the Vicar Apostolic of the Western District of England, a position that placed him in charge of the pastoral care of the Catholic community in the southwest of England. Jeune's tenure as Vicar Apostolic was marked by his dedication to the education of the Catholic laity. He established a number of schools and seminaries, including the famous Downside Abbey School, which would go on to produce several prominent Catholic intellectuals and leaders. In 1864, Jeune was appointed as the Bishop-Designate of Peterborough, a position he held until his death in 1868. During his brief time as bishop, he continued his work in education and also focused on the establishment of religious communities in his diocese. This photograph captures a moment in the life of a remarkable man who dedicated himself to the spiritual and educational needs of his flock, leaving a lasting impact on the Catholic Church in England.
