This evocative image captures the bravery and determination of the British Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) during World War I as a DH6 biplane provides protective cover to a convoy of merchant ships. Dating from 1917-1918, the DH6, also known as the Airco DH.6, was a two-seat biplane designed by the renowned aviation pioneer, Geoffrey de Havilland. Its open cockpit and powerful engine made it an ideal choice for reconnaissance and escort duties. The ships in the convoy, laden with vital supplies, braved the treacherous waters of the North Sea, where they were vulnerable to attack from German U-boats and other submarines. The RNAS played a crucial role in protecting these vital supply lines, using their agile biplanes to spot and report the presence of enemy submarines, as well as engaging in aerial combat. In this photograph, the DH6 biplane can be seen flying low over the convoy, its pilot scanning the waters below for any signs of danger. The ships in the convoy, with their sails set and smoke stacks billowing, plow through the waves, their crews no doubt grateful for the protective presence of the RNAS.
