EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of historical upheaval as British officials depose King Sri Wickrama Rajasinhe of Kandy, the last independent kingdom in Sri Lanka, in 1815. The king, depicted here in resplendent regalia, sits in disbelief as the British representatives, dressed in their formal attire, approach him with determined expressions. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of the lush, tropical landscape of Sri Lanka, adding a sense of contrast and poignancy to the event. The Second Anglo-Kandyan War had been raging for over two years, and the British, who had already gained control of much of the island, sought to bring the last remaining independent kingdom under their rule. On January 2, 1815, the British forces, led by General Sir Thomas Maitland, marched on the royal city of Kandy. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinhe, who had ruled for only a short time, was no match for the superior British military might. Despite his valiant efforts to resist, the king was eventually forced to surrender. The image of his deposition is a poignant reminder of the end of an era in Sri Lankan history. The British officials, who are shown in the photograph, are believed to be Sir Thomas Maitland, the British Resident in Kandy, and Captain William Macan, the British military officer who led the assault on the royal palace. The event marked the end of the Kandyan Kingdom and the beginning of British rule in Sri Lanka, which would last until the country gained its independence in 1948. This photograph is a testament to the rich and complex history of Sri Lanka and the profound impact that colonialism had on its people and culture.
