1840 1849 Britannia Career Cunard Cunarder Ends Launched Mail Regular Sold Starts Steam Ships Sunk Target Trans Atlantic Liner

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative image captures the historic British passenger liner, Britannia, in her glory days as a Cunarder. Launched in 1849, she was the pioneer of the first regular transatlantic mail service, connecting Europe and North America. With her sleek design and advanced steam-powered engines, she revolutionized ocean travel, paving the way for a new era of transportation. The Britannia's illustrious career, however, was not to last. In 1855, she was sold to Germany, marking the end of her illustrious tenure with the Cunard Line. Despite her new ownership, she continued to serve as a vital link between the old and the new worlds, carrying passengers and cargo across the Atlantic. As the years passed, the Britannia began to show her age. By the turn of the century, she was no longer fit for service and was ultimately repurposed as a target ship. In 1915, during the First World War, she met her tragic end when she was sunk off the coast of England. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the Britannia's storied past. With her proud figurehead and majestic sails, she embodies the spirit of adventure and innovation that defined the age of sail and steam. A true maritime icon, her legacy continues to inspire generations of travelers and historians alike." Mary Evans Picture Library/Mary Evans Prints Online. Reproduced with permission.
