Young is best known for his leadership role in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormons, serving as its President from 1847 until 1877. In addition to his religious duties, Young was also the founder of Salt Lake City and the first governor of the Utah Territory in the United States. The image, which features Young seated in a chair, is surrounded by his 21 wives. From left to right, they are identified as: Vanessa (Van) Carter, Mary Ann Carter, Kendall Chase, Martha McBride, Lucy Bigelow, Harriet Robinson, Eliza Snow, Eliza Ann Reese, Eliza Maria Burgess, Clara Decker, Augusta Cott, Zina Diantha Huntington Jacobs, Emmeline B. Wells, Presendia Buell Ross, Jane McMullin Jenkins, Naamah Olivers Bidamon, Emelia Folsom, and Sarah Ann Bowker. Young's practice of polygamy, which was a controversial aspect of Mormonism, is evident in this photograph.
