Born on November 17, 1729, in Saint-Malo, France, Bougainville embarked on an illustrious career in the French Navy, eventually commanding his own ship, the Boudeuse, on a voyage of discovery around the world between 1766 and 1769. This journey resulted in the publication of his famous account, "A Voyage Around the World," which brought him significant acclaim. However, this photograph does not depict Bougainville on one of his grand voyages but rather during an earlier expedition to South America. Here, he is shown crossing the Santa Lucia River, likely in present-day Uruguay, with the assistance of horses. The horses' strength and agility are evident as they pull the canoe through the water, allowing Bougainville to traverse the river with ease.
