Bonzos Latest: This Weeks Studdy

Famous dog, just after he had finally been christened with the name Bonzo. He appears with a swollen eye after fighting with a wasp. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Studdy also produced a large body of work for the Sketch before and after Bonzo including his later creation, Ooloo the cat. His early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog until readers demanded a name and Bruce Ingram, the ILN editor, suggested his immortal moniker. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Bonzo, the famous small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, just after he had been given his name by his creator, George Ernest Studdy, in the late 1920s. Bonzo, who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922, had already ignited a global craze resulting in an abundance of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and other collectibles. In this image, Bonzo's swollen eye attests to his recent encounter with a wasp, adding to his endearing and mischievous persona. George Studdy, born in 1878, was a prolific British cartoonist who created Bonzo and later, Ooloo the cat, among other beloved characters. Studdy's early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog until readers demanded a name. Bruce Ingram, the editor of the Illustrated London News (ILN), suggested the immortal moniker 'Bonzo,' which stuck. Studdy's body of work for the Sketch spanned decades, with Bonzo becoming his most iconic creation. The Bonzo craze swept the world, and Studdy's work was published in various media outlets, cementing his place in the annals of cartoon history. Bonzo's saucer eyes, expressive face, and indiscriminate breeding made him a beloved character, and his popularity endures to this day. This photograph is a historical reminder of the early days of Bonzo, a time when the world fell in love with this mischievous, swollen-eyed pup.
