Bonsecours, France - Le Bourdon (heavy bell)

Bonsecours, France - Le Bourdon (heavy bell) - The Big Leon is a drone, a big bell of over 6 tons melted in the workshops Drouot in Douai, in the North in 1892. It was originally to be placed in the steeple of the Basilica at Bonsecours, but was to heavy to be borne by the tower. It was therefore installed in front of the Basilica in a cage as can be seen on this postcard. Date: circa 1910s

Bell Bourdon Cage Drone Heavy Leon Mounting Bon Secours

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bonsecours, France - Le Bourdon (Heavy Bell) - The Big Leon: A Historical Glimpse into the Past This photograph transports us back in time to the quaint town of Bonsecours, France, in the 1910s. The image showcases the impressive 'Le Bourdon,' or 'The Big Leon,' a massive bell that weighs over 6 tons. This drone-shaped bell was forged in the renowned Drouot foundry in Douai, located in the northern part of France, in 1892. Originally intended for the steeple of the Basilica at Bonsecours, the bell proved to be too heavy for the tower to bear. Instead, it was installed in front of the Basilica in a protective cage, as depicted in this postcard. The cage was necessary to shield the bell from potential damage and ensure the safety of the community. The Big Leon, despite its imposing size, is a testament to the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of the time. Its unique drone shape adds an intriguing visual element to the already beautiful Basilica, making it a beloved landmark in Bonsecours. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of French architecture and the intriguing stories that lie within the towns and cities of France.
