Bobby Leach and his barrel - Niagara Falls

British former stuntman Bobby Leach (1858 - 1926) and his barrel, in which he survived passage over Niagara Falls, Canada, at severe detriment to his future health! He was the second person to go over the falls in a barrel in July, 1911. This photographic montage appears to pre-date the attempt as the barrel is un-dented and Mr Leach appears far too healthy

Attempt Barrel Bobby Crossing Daring Eccentric Eccentricity Falls Injuries Insanity Madness Niagara Passage Stunt Stunts Dare Devil Stunt Man

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, British stuntman Bobby Leach stands proudly next to his barrel, a metal vessel that would later carry him on a daring and historic passage over Niagara Falls in Canada. The image, taken prior to Leach's attempt in July 1911, showcases an unscathed barrel and a remarkably healthy Leach, his eyes gleaming with a mix of excitement and determination. Born in 1858, Leach was an eccentric figure, known for his daring stunts and insatiable thirst for adventure. His decision to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel was a testament to his unyielding courage and the depths of his eccentricity, which some might label as madness. The Niagara Falls, one of the world's most powerful natural wonders, had already claimed several lives, making Leach's endeavor a risky one. However, the stuntman was undeterred. He believed that he could survive the perilous journey by using a custom-built barrel with air chambers and a leather cover to protect him from the falls' crushing waters. Leach's attempt was a success, making him the second person to survive a passage over Niagara Falls in a barrel. However, the victory came at a severe cost. The extreme force of the water left him with numerous injuries, including a fractured skull and a broken jaw. His health continued to deteriorate in the years following the stunt, eventually leading to his death in 1926. This photograph, a snapshot of Leach's preparations, stands as a testament to the human spirit's capacity for daring feats and the lengths people will go to in pursuit of their dreams, no matter the risks involved.
