EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the notorious figure of Bob Dalton, an American train robber and outlaw who terrorized the Midwest during the late 1800s. Born in the 1860s, Dalton and his brothers, Bill, Emmett, and Grat, formed one of the most infamous train robbery gangs in American history. Their criminal exploits began in the 1880s and continued until the tragic end of Bob's life in 1892. The Dalton gang gained notoriety for their daring train robberies, often targeting trains carrying valuable shipments. Their most famous heist occurred on October 5, 1891, when they attempted to rob the First National Bank of Cunningham, Kansas. Despite their meticulous planning and previous successes, the robbery ended in disaster. A posse was alerted to their whereabouts, and during the ensuing shootout, Bob Dalton was mortally wounded. He died a few days later, becoming a symbol of the wild and lawless frontier. This photograph, taken during Bob Dalton's lifetime, offers a rare glimpse into the face of a man whose name would become synonymous with the American Old West. His story serves as a reminder of the danger and excitement that characterized the era of outlaws and bandits, a time when the line between criminal and hero was often blurred.
