EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from 1903, titled "The Boatie Rows," we find ourselves in the midst of a lively scene on the water. A boatman, identified as Cynicus or "Boatie," remains completely unperturbed as he rows his small, wooden boat through choppy waters, carrying a motley crew of passengers. The passengers, on the other hand, are a different story. Some are lost in thought, like the man in the bow with his head in his hands, while others, such as the woman in the middle, are praying fervently. The man in the back, wearing a hat adorned with a cross, looks alarmed and frightened, while another passenger, Anderson, clings to the side of the boat with a white-knuckled grip. The passengers' concerns are well-founded as the waves crash against the uneven sides of the boat, sending spray and water over the passengers. The swell is particularly evident in the way the water is splashing over the boatman's head, yet he continues to row steadily, seemingly unfazed by the tumultuous conditions. Despite the passengers' fears, it appears that this was not a commercial pleasure cruise, as there is no mention of a company or any indication of commercial use in the title or caption. Instead, it seems that this was an ordinary day on the water for Cynicus and his passengers, a testament to their resilience and the boatman's skill in navigating through the choppy waters. This photograph, with its vivid depiction of the passengers' emotions and the boatman's unwavering calm, offers a glimpse into the past and the challenges that people faced while traveling on the water. It also highlights the importance of a skilled boatman, like Cynicus, who could navigate through the most challenging conditions and keep his passengers safe.
