The image, taken on November 13, 1887, depicts a violent clash between police and demonstrators in London, during a protest organized by the Social Democratic Federation and the Irish National League. The demonstration was in response to the imprisonment of Irish MP William O'Brien, who was jailed for incitement following an incident in the Irish Land War. The photograph shows a large crowd gathered in Parliament Street, near Westminster, with police officers in the foreground attempting to maintain order amidst the chaos. The demonstrators, many of whom are from South London and Battersea, are seen engaging in fierce fighting with the Metropolitan Police. The atmosphere is thick with anger and determination, as both sides refuse to back down. The event came to be known as "Bloody Sunday" due to the significant number of injuries sustained by demonstrators during the clashes. The incident highlighted the deep-rooted tensions between the Irish community and the British government, and served as a catalyst for further protests and unrest in the years to come. This photograph is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the complex relationship between Ireland and Britain.
