Reptiles Toads

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1960s, two Blomberg's Toads (Bufo blombergi) are shown resting on a mossy surface, their unique features on full display. The Blomberg's Toad, also known as the Chiriqui Toad or the Golden Toad, is a species native to the highlands of Panama and western Colombia. These toads are named after the Swedish naturalist Carl Hjalmar Blomberg, who first described the species in 1912. The Blomberg's Toad is easily recognizable by its vibrant golden coloration, which helps it blend in with the leaf litter on the forest floor. In this photograph, the toads' golden skin glows against the dark, damp background, their large, round bodies and prominent parotoid glands evident. Parotoid glands are located behind the eyes and are used to secrete a toxic substance when the toad feels threatened. The Blomberg's Toad is a nocturnal species, spending most of its day hidden away in burrows or under logs. It feeds primarily on insects and other invertebrates, using its long, sticky tongue to capture prey. The species is considered to be of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but its populations are declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the unique and fascinating creatures that can be found in the world's forests. It transports us back in time to the 1960s, when naturalists like Carl Hjalmar Blomberg were still discovering new species and documenting the natural world for future generations. The Blomberg's Toad remains an intriguing subject for herpetologists and nature enthusiasts alike, and this photograph is a testament to its enduring allure.
