Birkenhead Sinks: A Moment of Heroism and Tragedy in Maritime History This evocative image captures the final moments of the Birkenhead, a British troopship, as it sinks off the coast of South Africa in 1852. The Birkenhead, a large transport vessel, was on a voyage from India to England, carrying over 600 passengers and crew, including soldiers, women, and children. The disaster occurred on February 26, 1852, when the ship struck an uncharted rock in the shallow waters of False Bay, near Cape Town. Despite the efforts of the crew to save the vessel, the Birkenhead began to take on water rapidly. Faced with the grim reality of imminent sinking, the captain, Robert Salmon, made the fateful decision to save the women and children first, ordering the soldiers to form a human chain to pass them to safety.
