Ambitions Caesar Consul Julius Oppose Opposing Vain

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative ancient Roman print by Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness a pivotal moment in the tumultuous political history of the Roman Republic: the clash between two great figures, Marcus Calpurnius Bibulus and Gaius Julius Caesar. The year is 59 BC, and Bibulus, standing resolutely with a scroll in hand, faces off against the charismatic Caesar, who is depicted striding forward, his hand raised in defiance. Bibulus, a respected consul and a staunch defender of the traditional Roman political order, had been elected to the office alongside Caesar. However, the ambitious and popular Caesar, who had amassed significant power through military conquests, had other plans. He sought to consolidate his position and expand his influence, much to the dismay of the conservative Bibulus. Determined to oppose Caesar's ambitions, Bibulus took drastic measures. He had the Roman priests perform an unusual ritual, asking them to pray for unfavorable weather conditions to disrupt Caesar's planned public works projects. The gods, it seemed, were on Bibulus' side, as a series of storms indeed disrupted Caesar's plans, delaying his public works and frustrating his efforts to win popular favor. Caesar, however, was not one to be easily deterred. He continued to press forward, using his oratorical skills and political acumen to outmaneuver Bibulus at every turn. In the end, Bibulus' efforts were in vain, as Caesar's popularity and power continued to grow. This print captures the tension and drama of this historic confrontation, offering a glimpse into the complex political landscape of ancient Rome and the clash between tradition and ambition. The determined expression on Bibulus' face and the defiant stance of Caesar make for a striking visual representation of this pivotal moment in Roman history.
