EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the enigmatic South American Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), a fascinating creature that has graced the natural world since the late 18th century. The Tapir, a close relative of the elephant and rhinoceros, was initially misclassified by the renowned Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in his groundbreaking 1758 work, "Systema Naturae," as a hippopotamus due to its elongated snout and semi-aquatic habits. The Tapir in this photograph, captured in the early 19th century, is a testament to the rich natural history of South America. The American Tapir, also known as the Common Tapir, is the largest of the four extant tapir species, with adults reaching lengths of up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) and weights of up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds). This Tapir is shown in its natural habitat, near a body of water. Tapirs are excellent swimmers and are known to dive into the water to escape predators, such as jaguars and anacondas. Their powerful limbs propel them through the water with ease, making them agile and elusive in their aquatic environment. The Tapir's elongated snout, which is home to an impressive array of sensory organs, is an adaptation that allows it to forage efficiently in the dense vegetation of its forested habitat. This nocturnal creature feeds on a wide variety of vegetation, including fruits, leaves, and shoots, making it a vital component of the forest ecosystem. This evocative photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the natural world was still largely unexplored and the wonders of the animal kingdom continued to surprise and delight.
