EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Benjamin Lee Guinness, an influential figure in Dublin's history, in the prime of his life. Born in 1798, Benjamin was the son of Arthur Guinness, the founder of the renowned Guinness Brewery in 1759. Benjamin began working for the family business as a manager in 1825, eventually becoming its sole proprietor in 1855. The Guinness Brewery, located in the heart of Dublin, was a significant economic force in the city during the 19th century. Benjamin's leadership and vision helped steer the business through challenging times, including the Great Famine in the late 1840s. In 1851, Benjamin made history when he was appointed as the first lord mayor of Dublin, a position he held with great pride and distinction. His tenure as mayor was marked by his commitment to improving the living conditions of the city's residents and promoting economic development. Despite his busy schedule, Benjamin remained deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the brewery. He continued to innovate and expand the business, introducing new brewing techniques and products. One of his most notable achievements was the introduction of the "Extra Stout" beer, which would later become synonymous with the Guinness brand. This photograph, taken in the late 1860s, captures Benjamin Lee Guinness as a successful businessman, a dedicated public servant, and a proud Dubliner. His legacy continues to live on in the city he loved and the iconic brewery he helmed.
