EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the vast expanse of the Flanders fields in August 1914, Belgian troops prepared for battle against the advancing German forces during the early stages of World War I. In an ingenious attempt to blend in with their surroundings and evade enemy detection, these soldiers cleverly camouflaged their caps with straw, merging seamlessly with the golden hues of the harvested wheat. The Battle of Haelen, also known as the Battle of Halen, took place in the small Belgian town of the same name, located in the eastern part of the country. As the first major engagement between the Belgian and German armies, the battle marked the beginning of the larger-scale hostilities in the region. With the war raging on around them, these brave Belgian soldiers, their faces unseen beneath their camouflaged caps, stood resolute and determined, ready to defend their homeland against the invading forces.
