EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and courage of two Belgian pilots, Michel Donnet and Leon Divoy, during the turbulent year of 1916. With the German forces having invaded and occupied their homeland, the spirit of resistance among the Belgian people refused to be quelled. Hidden away in a secluded location, the intrepid duo came across an old, dilapidated aeroplane. Undeterred by the challenges before them, they set to work, repairing and restoring the aircraft to fighting condition. Their daring plan was to make an escape to England, where they could join the Allied forces in the ongoing battle against the Germans. With the risk of discovery ever present, they worked tirelessly, driven by their desire to fight for their country and make a difference in the war effort. Finally, with their repaired aeroplane ready, they embarked on their perilous journey. The skies above Belgium were heavily patrolled by German aircraft, making their escape a truly daring feat. Against all odds, they managed to evade detection and successfully reached English soil. In England, they were welcomed with open arms by the Royal Flying Corps. Their skills and experience were put to great use, and they became valuable assets in the Allied forces. Together, Donnet and Divoy went on to achieve great success, contributing significantly to the eventual Allied victory in World War I. This photograph stands as a testament to their indomitable spirit and the resilience of the human will to fight against adversity.
