EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and bravery of Belgian aviator, Jean Olieslagers (1883-1942), as he joins the Belgian Air Force in the midst of World War One. Olieslagers, a native of Belgium, answered the call to defend his country against the invading German forces. With a natural aptitude for flying and a fierce desire to protect his homeland, Olieslagers quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the leading aces in the Belgian Air Force. The date on this photograph is estimated to be between 1916 and 1918, a period during which Olieslagers achieved many aerial victories against the Germans. His skill and courage in the cockpit earned him a reputation as a formidable opponent and a hero to his fellow Belgian soldiers. Despite the dangers of combat, Olieslagers continued to fly fearlessly, knowing that each mission could mean the difference between victory and defeat for his country. This photograph serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the war effort and his dedication to the cause of freedom. Tragically, Olieslagers was killed in action on November 13, 1942, during a mission over occupied Belgium. His legacy, however, lives on as one of the most celebrated Belgian aviators of World War One. This powerful image reminds us of the sacrifices made by brave men and women like Olieslagers, who answered the call to defend their countries and protect the values of freedom and democracy.
