EDITORS COMMENTS
Beaver (Castor canadensis), 1814 This print, titled simply as "Beaver" and dated 1814, showcases the striking features of the North American beaver (Castor canadensis). The common beaver is a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to North America, renowned for its remarkable ability to construct dams and lodges using branches and mud. The beaver in this print is depicted in its natural habitat, with its sleek, brown fur glistening in the water. Its powerful, webbed hind feet are fully submerged, while its front paws are curled under its body, providing balance as it swims gracefully. The beaver's flat, broad tail is also visible, acting as a rudder to steer its direction. The intricate details of the beaver's features are beautifully captured in this print. Its sharp, incisor teeth are clearly visible, used for both cutting down trees and gnawing on wood to maintain its continuously growing incisors. The beaver's eyes are wide and alert, observing its surroundings with keen interest. The print is a testament to the natural beauty and adaptability of the common beaver. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving habitats and protecting these fascinating creatures, which continue to play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems. This print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, is a valuable resource for anyone interested in natural history, wildlife, or the history of scientific illustration. Its high-resolution image and rights-managed licensing make it an excellent choice for educational or artistic projects, allowing us to appreciate the intricacies of the natural world and the skill of the artist who captured it over two centuries ago.
