EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful postcard, dated 1907, features a portrait of Princess Beatrice of Battenberg, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Beatrice was born on April 20, 1857, in London, England, and was the sixth child and fourth daughter of the monarch. In 1885, she married Prince Heinrich of Battenberg, a German prince, in a grand wedding ceremony held at St. James's Palace. The image on the postcard shows Princess Beatrice in her elegant wedding attire, wearing a stunning hat adorned with ostrich feathers and pearls. Her dress, designed by Madame Carrier-Belleuse, was made of ivory silk satin and featured a high collar, long sleeves, and a fitted bodice, typical of the late Victorian era. Princess Beatrice and Prince Heinrich had five children together: Victoria, Leopold, Henry, Alice, and Maurice. However, their happiness was short-lived as World War I broke out in 1899, and the anti-German sentiment in Britain led to the royal family's decision to renounce their German titles and adopt the title of "Mountbatten." Despite the family's name change, Princess Beatrice continued to be a beloved member of the British royal family. She was known for her intelligence, wit, and strong personality, and was often described as her mother's favorite child. Tragically, Princess Beatrice's life was cut short when she passed away on October 26, 1944, at the age of 87. She is buried in the Royal Frogmore Estate in Windsor, alongside her husband and their daughter, Princess Alice, who died in a tragic fire in 1897. This postcard is a beautiful reminder of the life and legacy of Princess Beatrice, a beloved member of the British royal family and the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria.
