EDITORS COMMENTS
Bears in the Northern Sky: A Historical Gaze at Ursa Major and Ursa Minor This image, dating back to circa 1900, presents a breathtaking view of the night sky, with its focus on two celestial phenomena named after majestic bears: Ursa Major, the Great Bear, and Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. These constellations, visible in the northern hemisphere, have long been a source of fascination for astronomers, stargazers, and storytellers alike. Ursa Major, the larger of the two constellations, is easily recognizable by its distinctive Big Dipper asterism. This group of stars, also known as the Plough or the Wagon, has been a guiding beacon for navigators for centuries. Ursa Major is home to several other notable stars and deep-sky objects, including the brilliant star Mizar and the beautiful open cluster, the Pleiades. Ursa Minor, the smaller constellation, is less prominent but no less intriguing. It is most famous for its asterism, the Little Dipper, which contains the North Star, Polaris. This celestial body has been an essential navigational tool for sailors and travelers for thousands of years. The names Ursa Major and Ursa Minor have a rich historical background. The ancient Greeks associated the Great Bear with Callisto, a nymph who was transformed into a bear by Zeus' jealous wife, Hera. Ursa Minor, on the other hand, was believed to represent the bear cub Arcturus, who was placed in the sky by Zeus as a reward for the loyalty of Callisto's son, Arcas. This stunning photograph, captured over a century ago, invites us to explore the wonders of the night sky and the fascinating stories it holds. As we gaze upon the stars of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, we are reminded of the enduring allure of the cosmos and the human curiosity that drives us to seek answers about the universe around us.
