EDITORS COMMENTS
BAUM / 0Z - 2: A Vintage Journey into the Enchanted Land of Oz with the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow Step into the magical world of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" with this title page from the 1900 edition of the second book in the series, "The Marvelous Land of Oz," published by the Reilly and Britton Company. This exquisite print, featuring the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, invites us to embark on a historical and wonderful journey through the pages of one of the most beloved children's stories of all time. The Tin Woodman, also known as Nick Chopper, is a kind-hearted and loyal companion to Dorothy and her friends. Once a skilled woodworker, he was transformed into a tin man by the Wicked Witch of the East, who took away his heart and replaced it with a ticking one. In this image, the Tin Woodman, with his polished tin exterior and oilcan heart, stands proudly next to the Scarecrow, who, despite being made of straw, is wiser and more intelligent than many living beings. The Scarecrow, or Thropp, is a symbol of wisdom and intelligence. He was created by Professor Winkie to scare away birds from a cornfield, but when Dorothy and her companions encounter him, they discover that he is far more than just a scarecrow. In this title page, the Scarecrow, with his straw body and button eyes, is shown in a thoughtful pose, deep in contemplation. This title page is a testament to the enduring charm and appeal of Baum's Oz books, which have captivated generations of readers with their fantastical characters, enchanting stories, and timeless themes. As we gaze at this beautiful print, we are transported back in time, to a place where tin men have hearts, scarecrows are wise, and the magic of Oz comes alive in our imaginations.
