The Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, was a major military conflict in South America that lasted from 1864 to 1870. Paraguay, led by the ambitious and militaristic dictator Francisco Solano López, declared war on Argentina and Uruguay in an attempt to expand Paraguayan territory and assert dominance in the region. Brazil joined the alliance against Paraguay in support of its neighbors. The Battle of Yatay was one of the largest engagements of the war, with an estimated 50,000 troops involved. The Paraguayan forces, outnumbered and outgunned, were unable to withstand the onslaught of the allied forces. Duarte, who had led the Paraguayan forces in the battle, was captured and later executed. The defeat marked the beginning of the end for the Paraguayan resistance.
