EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Tours, also known as the Battle of Poitiers, which took place in October 732 near the city of Tours in modern-day France. The battle is considered one of the most significant events in European history, as it marked the end of the Muslim expansion into Europe and the beginning of the European Middle Ages. At the helm of the Frankish forces was Charles Martel, the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, who emerged victorious against the invading Saracen army led by their commander, Abderrahman ibn Abdillah. The Saracens, who had already conquered much of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, had set their sights on expanding further into Europe. The battle took place on a plain, with the Frankish forces positioned on higher ground, giving them a strategic advantage. The Saracens, however, initially gained the upper hand and pushed the Frankish lines back. But Martel rallied his troops and led a counterattack, resulting in the Saracens' eventual defeat. The defeat of the Saracens at Tours was a turning point in European history. It prevented the further spread of Islam into Europe and allowed the Frankish kingdoms to consolidate their power. Abderrahman ibn Abdillah, the Saracen commander, was killed in the battle, marking the end of the Muslim presence in Western Europe for several centuries. This print captures the intensity and drama of the Battle of Tours, with the clash of arms and the determination of the warriors on both sides. The historical significance of this battle is evident in the iconic image of Charles Martel standing victorious over the defeated Saracen forces.
