The Battle of Sempach, fought on July 9, 1386, is a pivotal moment in Swiss history, marking the defeat of Leopold III, Duke of Austria, and his army. The Swiss Confederation, a loose alliance of three cantons at the time, emerged victorious, largely due to the heroic actions of Arnold von Winkelried. The scene depicted in this print shows the decisive moment of the battle, with the Austrian spearmen forming a tight phalanx, ready to charge at the Swiss infantry. However, Arnold von Winkelried, a peasant farmer from the canton of Unterwald, saw an opportunity to turn the tide of the battle. He rallied his fellow Swiss soldiers, urging them to charge at the Austrian line. Despite being outnumbered and outmatched, Arnold led the charge, breaking through the Austrian spearmen's formation. He was the first to reach the enemy line, and his bravery inspired his comrades to follow. The Swiss infantry, armed with pikes and halberds, managed to penetrate the Austrian ranks, causing chaos and confusion. Leopold III, caught off guard by the unexpected attack, was forced to retreat. The Swiss victory at the Battle of Sempach marked the end of Austrian dominance in the region and strengthened the Swiss Confederation's position.
