1386 Arnold Austria Austrian Breaks Defeat Heroism Largely Leopold Sempach Swiss Winkelried Spearmen

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Sempach, fought on July 9, 1386, is a pivotal moment in Swiss history, marking the defeat of Leopold III, Duke of Austria, and his army at the hands of the Swiss confederates. This historic print depicts the decisive moment of the battle, where Arnold von Winkelried, a Swiss hero, is shown breaking the line of the Austrian spearmen. Leopold III, determined to assert his power over the Swiss cantons, had led an army of around 10,000 men into the region. The Swiss, numbering around 8,000, were initially taken by surprise but rallied under the leadership of their confederates. The battle took place near the village of Sempach, in what is now central Switzerland. The Austrian army, known for its disciplined and well-armed spearmen, had the upper hand in the early stages of the battle. However, the Swiss, driven by a deep sense of national pride and determination, refused to yield. Arnold von Winkelried, a knight from the canton of Unterwalden, is said to have led the charge against the Austrian line. He is depicted in the print, with his arms outstretched, breaking the line of the Austrian spearmen and allowing the Swiss to advance. The Battle of Sempach was a turning point in Swiss history, marking the end of Austrian dominance in the region and strengthening the Swiss confederation. The heroism of Arnold von Winkelried became the stuff of legend, and his bravery continues to be celebrated in Swiss culture to this day.
