EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Poltava, fought on July 28, 1709, is considered a pivotal moment in the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia. In this historic image from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we see Peter the Great of Russia (1672-1725) on horseback, surveying the battlefield after his decisive victory over Charles XII of Sweden (1682-1718). The Swedish king is depicted in the distance, leading his troops in a futile attempt to retreat. The Battle of Poltava took place near the city of Poltava in present-day Ukraine. Peter the Great, determined to expand the Russian Empire, had been waging war against Sweden for several years. The Swedish forces, led by Charles XII, had initially been successful, but their victory at the Battle of Narva in 1700 had emboldened them to press further into Russian territory. However, Peter the Great was a formidable opponent. He had modernized the Russian army and navy, and had studied military tactics in Europe. In the lead-up to the Battle of Poltava, he had carefully maneuvered his forces to outflank the Swedes, cutting off their supply lines and trapping them in a narrow valley. The battle itself was fierce and bloody, with both sides suffering heavy losses. But in the end, Peter's superior tactics and organization proved decisive. Charles XII was forced to flee the battlefield, leaving behind thousands of dead and wounded soldiers. The Russian victory at Poltava effectively ended Swedish dominance in the Baltic region and paved the way for the expansion of the Russian Empire. This powerful and evocative image captures the moment of triumph for Peter the Great and the Russian forces, as they survey the battlefield and prepare to celebrate their victory over the Swedes. It is a testament to the enduring power of history and the indelible impact of great leaders on the course of human events.
