EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Pollilur, fought on September 6, 1780, between the formidable Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, and Col. William Bailey of the British East India Company. The historic encounter took place in southern India, near the town of Pollilur, and marked a significant victory for Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan, known as Tippu Sahib or Tippu Ali, ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 to 1799. He was a brilliant military strategist and a formidable opponent to the British East India Company, which sought to expand its territories in India. In the Battle of Pollilur, Bailey led a force of around 1,200 British and European soldiers, along with 2,000 Indian sepoys, against Tipu Sultan's army of around 60,000. Despite the vast numerical advantage, Bailey's force was unexpectedly defeated. The print captures the moment of triumph as Tipu Sultan's troops close in on the British soldiers, with Tipu Sultan himself depicted on horseback, brandishing a sword and leading the charge. Bailey was captured in the battle and later released in exchange for a ransom. The Battle of Pollilur was a turning point in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, a series of conflicts between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Mysore. The event is an intriguing chapter in the rich and complex history of India, showcasing the military prowess and strategic acumen of both Tipu Sultan and the British forces. This print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when battles were fought not just for territorial expansion, but also for the pride and prestige of rulers and empires.
