EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Patay, fought on June 18, 1429, marked a significant turning point in the Hundred Years' War between England and France. In the preceding months, the French, under the leadership of Joan of Arc and the Duc d'Alencon, had successfully relieved the siege of Orleans, dealing a major blow to the English forces. In the aftermath of Orleans's liberation, the English army, led by the Earl of Talbot, retreated northward towards Paris. The French forces, buoyed by their recent victory, pursued the English relentlessly. The Battle of Patay ensued near the town of Patay, in the Loire Valley. The French charge, spearheaded by Joan of Arc and the Duc d'Alencon, caught the English forces off guard. The English ranks began to crumble as panic spread through their ranks. Talbot, the English commander, was captured during the battle, further weakening the English morale. The Battle of Patay resulted in a decisive French victory, forcing the English to abandon their plans to retake Paris. The event significantly weakened the English presence in France and paved the way for the French reconquest of their territory. This historical print depicts the chaotic scene of the Battle of Patay, with the French forces charging forward against the retreating English. The expression of panic on the faces of some English soldiers and the determined look on the faces of the French knights underscores the intensity of the battle. The Battle of Patay, fought on June 18, 1429, remains an important event in the annals of medieval warfare and French history.
