EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Narva, fought on November 30, 1700, was a significant turning point in the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia. In this historic encounter, the Swedish army, led by King Carl XII, decisively defeated the Russian forces under General Dolgorouky. The Russians suffered a heavy loss, with estimates putting their casualties at around 10,000 men, while the Swedes lost a mere 800. The Battle of Narva took place near the Narva River in present-day Estonia. King Carl XII had been campaigning in Poland and Lithuania before turning his attention to Russia. He led a small but determined army of around 14,000 men against the much larger Russian force of about 40,000. Despite being outnumbered, Carl XII chose to attack the Russians head-on, launching a surprise assault on their camp in the early hours of November 30. The Swedes were initially repelled, but Carl XII rallied his troops and led them in a successful counterattack. The Russians were taken by surprise, and their disorganized ranks were no match for the disciplined Swedish army. The battle lasted for several hours, with both sides suffering heavy losses. The Battle of Narva was a significant victory for Sweden, as it marked the end of Russian expansion into the Baltic region and secured Sweden's position as a major European power. The defeat also had far-reaching consequences for Russia, as it led to a period of political instability and military reforms that would shape the Russian military for centuries to come. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts the aftermath of the Battle of Narva, with Swedish soldiers standing victoriously over the fallen Russian soldiers. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by both sides in this historic conflict and the enduring impact it had on European history.
