EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Moscow, 1812: A Turning Point in Napoleanic War History The Battle of Moscow, fought from September 14 to 18, 1812, is one of the most significant events in the history of the Napoleonic Wars. This historic print from Mary Evans Picture Library depicts the French army, led by Emperor Napolean Bonaparte, overcoming the Russian resistance and taking the city of Moscow. The campaign began in June 1812 when Napolean's Grand Army of over 600,000 men marched eastward from Poland towards Moscow, the heart of the Russian Empire. The initial Russian response was to retreat before the advancing French forces, allowing them to capture a series of key fortifications and cities. However, as Napolean's army approached Moscow, Tsar Alexander I ordered his troops to make a stand and defend the city. The Battle of Borodino, fought on September 7, 1812, was one of the bloodiest battles in European history, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Despite the French victory, Napolean failed to destroy the Russian army, and the city of Moscow remained untaken. In response, Napolean ordered his troops to march on Moscow and lay siege to the city. However, the Russians had already evacuated, leaving the city to burn. The French army entered an empty and smoldering Moscow on September 14, 1812. The subsequent retreat from Moscow, known as the "Grande Armée's Winter Campaign," was one of the most brutal and devastating military campaigns in history. The harsh Russian winter, combined with a lack of supplies and poor logistics, resulted in the deaths of over 90,000 French soldiers. The failure of the Moscow campaign marked the beginning of the end for Napolean's empire, leading to his eventual defeat and exile in 1814.
