EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the pivotal Battle of Ligny, which took place on June 16, 1815, during the Napoleonic Wars. The scene captures the moment when the Prussian General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1815) and his troops are being outmaneuvered by the French forces led by the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). The battle, which took place during the "Hundred Days" campaign, marked the beginning of the end for the Prussian army and ultimately led to Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. In the foreground of the print, General Blücher is shown on horseback, surveying the battlefield with a determined expression. He is dressed in his full military regalia, with a red sash and a plumed hat adorned with a white feather. Behind him, the chaos of the battle rages on, with smoke rising from the gunpowder explosions and soldiers clashing in hand-to-hand combat. On the left side of the print, the French forces, led by the brilliant Prussian general August Neidhardt von Gneisenau (1760-1831), are seen advancing steadily towards the Prussian lines. Gneisenau, who had previously served under Blücher, had managed to rally the demoralized Prussian troops and led a successful counterattack against the French earlier in the day. However, his efforts were ultimately in vain as the French forces, under Napoleon's command, proved to be too strong. The Battle of Ligny was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars and marked the end of the Prussian army as a major military power in Europe. The events of this battle set the stage for the final confrontation between Napoleon and the allied forces at Waterloo, which took place just a few days later. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this historic battle and the far-reaching consequences of their actions.
