EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts a pivotal moment in the French Wars of Religion: the Battle of Ivry, fought on March 14, 1590. The scene unfolds before us as King Henry IV of France (1553-1610), mounted on horseback and clad in armor, leads his troops against the much larger Catholic army under the command of the Duke of Mayenne (1536-1611). The battle took place near the village of Ivry-la-Bataille, in present-day France. Henri IV, a Protestant, had been waging a long and arduous campaign to secure his throne against the Catholic League, which sought to prevent his ascension. The Battle of Ivry marked a turning point in the conflict, as Henri's forces, despite being outnumbered, managed to inflict a decisive defeat upon the Catholic army. The print captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat. The smoke from gunpowder and the dust raised by the horses' hooves create a hazy, otherworldly atmosphere. The central figure of Henri IV, with his raised sword and determined expression, stands out against the backdrop of the clashing armies. The Battle of Ivry was a significant victory for Henri IV, who went on to be crowned King of France in 1594. The event marked the beginning of the end of the Wars of Religion and the consolidation of the French monarchy under the Bourbon dynasty. This print is a testament to the bravery and strategic acumen of Henri IV and the pivotal role he played in shaping the history of France.
