EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts the Battle of Grandson, which took place on March 2, 1476, in Switzerland. The scene shows the Burgundian army, led by Charles the Bold, also known as Charles the Rash or Charles le Temeraire, being soundly defeated by the Swiss militia. Despite having twice as many men as the Swiss, the Burgundians were unable to overcome their disciplined and determined foes. Charles the Bold, who ruled the Burgundian Netherlands from 1467 until his death in 1477, had been expanding his territories and had set his sights on conquering Switzerland. He had already defeated the Swiss at the Battle of Murten in 1475, but the Swiss were not ready to give up without a fight. The Battle of Grandson was a turning point in the Swiss War of 1474-1477. The Swiss, led by their famous commander, Fribourg's Hans Trudpert, used their superior tactics and discipline to outmaneuver and outfight the larger Burgundian army. The Swiss infantry, known as the Landsknechts, were heavily armed and armored, and their pikemen formed a wall that the Burgundians were unable to penetrate. The defeat at Grandson was a humiliating blow for Charles the Bold, who was known for his military prowess. But he was not deterred. He regrouped and attacked the Swiss again at the Battle of Morat on July 22, 1476. This time, the Swiss were even more prepared, and they inflicted a decisive defeat on the Burgundians, effectively ending Charles's campaign in Switzerland. This print is a reminder of the military prowess and determination of the Swiss militia, who were able to defend their territory against a larger and better-equipped enemy. It is also a testament to the importance of tactics, discipline, and morale in battle, and the dangers of underestimating an opponent.
