Battered cruiser HMS Vindictive after Zeebrugge Raid

The damaged Cruiser HMS Vindictive (much repaired!) after the Zeebrugge Raid. Early in 1918 she was fitted out for the Zeebrugge Raid. Most of her guns were replaced by howitzers, flame-throwers and mortars. On 23 April 1918 she was in fierce action at Zeebrugge when she went alongside the Mole, and her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire. She was sunk as a blockship at Ostend during the Second Ostend Raid on 10 May 1918. The wreck was raised on 16 August 1920 and subsequently broken up. The bow section has been preserved in Ostend harbour serving as a memorial

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, the battered and damaged cruiser HMS Vindictive stands as a testament to the fierce action it endured during the Zeebrugge Raid in 1918. The image captures the aftermath of the historic event, which took place early in the year when the ship was fitted out with unconventional weapons such as howitzers, flame-throwers, and mortars. On 23 April 1918, HMS Vindictive was in the thick of the battle as it approached the Mole at Zeebrugge. The upperworks of the ship were mercilessly pummeled by enemy gunfire, leaving the once proud war vessel with extensive damage. Despite the heavy damage, HMS Vindictive played a crucial role in the raid, which aimed to block the Belgian port of Zeebrugge and disrupt German naval operations. Following the successful raid, HMS Vindictive was sunk as a blockship at Ostend during the Second Ostend Raid on 10 May 1918. The wreck of the cruiser was eventually raised on 16 August 1920, and the bow section was preserved in Ostend harbor as a memorial to the brave men who served aboard the ship and the significant role it played in the history of World War 1. This photograph provides a poignant reminder of the intense action that took place during the Zeebrugge Raid and the sacrifices made by the British Navy during the Great War. The battered and damaged cruiser HMS Vindictive stands as a symbol of the courage and determination of those who served in the conflict.
