Located in the highlands of present-day Lesotho, Thaba Bosigo was a formidable fortress that played a pivotal role in the resistance against British encroachment into Basutoland. Masupha, a skilled military leader, had built the stronghold on the steep slopes of Thaba Bosigo, making it nearly impregnable. The Gun War, also known as the First Basuto War, began in 1880 when the British, under the leadership of Sir Garnet Wolseley, sought to extend their control over Basutoland. Despite their bravery and determination, the Basutos were eventually defeated. Masupha and his followers were forced to surrender, and Basutoland became a British protectorate.
