EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Paul-François-Nicolas Barras, a pivotal figure in the French Revolution. Born in 1755, Barras rose to prominence as a Jacobin leader during the Revolution, playing a significant role in the fall of the monarchy and the Reign of Terror. However, his political allegiances shifted, and he became an enemy of Napoleon Bonaparte, who rose to power during the same period. Barras's complex political journey began when he joined the French army in 1772 but was discharged due to injury in 1776. He then turned to a career in the merchant marine, eventually returning to France during the Revolution. In 1792, Barras became a member of the Jacobin Club and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the President of the National Convention in 1794. During his tenure, he oversaw the execution of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. However, Barras's political views began to diverge from the radical Jacobins, and he played a crucial role in the Thermidorian Reaction, which led to the ousting of Maximilien Robespierre and the end of the Reign of Terror. Barras then served as the First Consul of France from 1799 to 1801, but his alliance with Napoleon was short-lived. In 1802, Barras was exiled, and he spent the remainder of his life in various European capitals. This print captures the intensity and complexity of Barras's political career, as well as the tumultuous nature of the French Revolution. The image of Barras, with his piercing gaze and stern expression, conveys the determination and ambition that characterized his political life. Despite his controversial role in French history, Barras remains an intriguing and important figure in the annals of the French Revolution.
