Baldwin Broadcasts, 1924

The first use of radio by party leaders in a general election: Mr Stanley Baldwin reading his address to the public into a microphone at the London headquarters of the BBC. Mr Asquith and Mr Ramsay Macdonald also made use of broadcasting speeches to listeners throughout the country, though, " Mr Macdonald did not broadcast well, owing to his oratorical devices of raising and lowering his voice, turning from side to side, and striding about the platform at various distances from the microphone." Date: 1924

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of political communication: the first use of radio by party leaders during a general election. In 1924, Sir Stanley Baldwin, the Conservative Party leader, poised confidently before a microphone at the London headquarters of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The innovative technology of radio broadcasting allowed him to communicate directly with the nation, bypassing traditional print and spoken media. Baldwin's rivals, H.H. Asquith of the Liberal Party and Ramsay Macdonald of the Labour Party, also made use of this new medium to reach voters across the country. However, Macdonald's oratorical style, characterized by raising and lowering his voice, turning from side to side, and striding about the platform at various distances from the microphone, did not translate well to radio. This photograph marks a significant shift in political discourse, as politicians began to harness the power of radio to connect with the public in a more direct and personal way.
