EDITORS COMMENTS
Bab Sharki, also known as Bab Esh-Sherky, is a historic gate located in the Old City of Damascus, Syria. This photograph, taken in 1880, captures the grandeur and intricacy of the gate as it once stood. Bab Sharki, which translates to "Eastern Gate," was one of the main entrances to the Old City and played an essential role in the city's history. The gate is adorned with beautiful Arabesque designs, intricate carvings, and colorful tiles. The arched entrance is framed by two tall, slender minarets, which once called the faithful to prayer. The gate's walls are adorned with intricate patterns and calligraphy, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Damascus. Bab Sharki was built during the Ottoman period, around the 16th or 17th century, and was a symbol of the city's prosperity and grandeur. The gate was not only an architectural marvel but also a vital commercial hub, with merchants and traders from all over the world passing through its gates. Unfortunately, the gate has undergone significant damage over the years due to various conflicts and natural disasters. Today, only the ruins of Bab Sharki remain, a poignant reminder of the city's rich history and the importance of preserving historical sites for future generations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and significance of Bab Sharki as it once was. The intricate designs, the grandeur of the gate, and the bustling commercial activity captured in this image provide a window into the history and culture of Damascus during the late 19th century.
