This enchanting image captures Avelina de Forz, Countess of Lancaster, in a moment of repose as she gazes out over the rolling hills of her ancestral lands. Born in 1269, Avelina was the daughter of Guido de Forz, 6th Earl of Albemarle, and Isabel de Clare. In 1290, she became the wife of Edmund Crouchback, the founder and first Earl of Lancaster. Avelina is depicted here in the elegant attire of the late 13th century, wearing a long, flowing gown of rich fabric, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The high-necked gown is cinched at the waist with a wide ribbon, and a wimple, a traditional head covering, frames her face.
