EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the tumultuous waters of the Adriatic Sea, during the early stages of the First World War, the damaged Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Novara makes its way back to port, escorted by her sister ship, SMS Sankt Georg. The scene unfolds after the Battle of the Otranto Straits, also known as the Otranto Barrage, which took place on May 15, 1917. The Otranto Barrage was a strategic move by the Allied forces to prevent the Austro-Hungarian and German naval fleets from passing through the narrow straits of the Adriatic Sea, thereby cutting off their supply lines to the Central Powers in the Balkans. The Allied forces, consisting mainly of British and French naval forces, laid a defensive barrage of mines across the straits, forcing the Austro-Hungarian and German fleets to engage in a series of battles to break through. In this poignant image, the damaged SMS Novara, with her masts and sails torn and battered, is seen being assisted by the SMS Sankt Georg. The light cruiser, also bearing the scars of battle, is providing support and assistance to the Novara as it makes its way back to port. The scene is a testament to the brutal and unforgiving nature of naval warfare during this period, with both sides suffering heavy losses. The Otranto Barrage proved to be a significant victory for the Allied forces, as it prevented the Central Powers from reinforcing their troops in the Balkans and ultimately contributed to the eventual defeat of Austria-Hungary in the war. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the sailors on both sides during this pivotal moment in world history.
