McCallum is one of the the few communities on the south coast of Newfoundland
McCallum is one of the the few communities on the south coast of Newfoundland. It is accessible by a two hour ferry ride from Hermitage. There are no roads in the town, but boardwalks suitable for ATV traffic are present.
Fishery was the way of life for over a century here and at one point the population was over 100 people.
Currently the population of the town is decreasing, with about 42 permanent residents and 4 kids in the school. The community recently voted for Resettlement. While most residents want to leave, McCallum needs 90 per cent of votes in order to get financial help from the government.
It is a very quiet and peaceful place where you can feel an old rhythm of life, something that is more and more hard to find in our modern world. It is great to see that places like this still exist, and I hope it will remain in the future

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Posnov captures the essence of McCallum, one of the few communities nestled along Newfoundland's south coast. With no roads but instead boardwalks for ATV traffic, this secluded town is accessible through a scenic two-hour ferry ride from Hermitage. For over a century, McCallum thrived on its deep connection to the fishery industry, boasting a population that once exceeded 100 residents. However, times have changed and currently only 42 permanent residents remain alongside four children attending the local school. The community recently voted for Resettlement in hopes of securing financial aid from the government; however, they require an overwhelming 90 percent majority vote. Despite its dwindling population, McCallum exudes tranquility and offers visitors a glimpse into an old rhythm of life that is increasingly rare in our modern world. This photograph showcases picturesque docks against a backdrop of serene waters and simple lifestyles. It serves as a reminder that places like McCallum still exist – where time seems to stand still and peace reigns supreme. As we admire this image captured by Posnov from Australian Views, let us appreciate the beauty found within these quiet corners of our planet and hope that McCallum continues to thrive well into the future.
